If you’re heading out to the countryside this weekend, help keep your vehicle safe by following a few simple tips:

– Never leave valuable possessions such as handbags, laptops, phones or sat navs on show inside your car. Even items of little value, such as shopping bags and clothing, may tempt a thief.

– Don’t hide your valuables in the boot. Someone may be watching.

– Always lock your car, wind up the windows and close the sunroof, even if you’re only leaving it for a few minutes.

– Double check it’s locked. It only takes a few seconds for your valuables to be stolen from an unlocked car.

We’re investigating after damage was caused to crops in the Monxton area by people using metal detectors last Sunday night.

As well as the damage to the fields, ‘Night Hawking’ as it is known, is a Heritage Crime, Heritage crime is “any offence which harms the value of England’s heritage assets and their settings to this and future generations”.

People that take part in Night Hawking rarely hand over any finds that they make and you must report treasure to the local coroner within 14 days of finding it.

There’s an unlimited fine or up to 3 months in prison for not reporting treasure.

There are people and clubs that legitimately take part in metal detecting, but they must have permission to do so.

If you have any information in relation to this incident, please contact us 101 quoting 44170114292, or if you do see anybody taking part in this activity please report it to us so that we can ascertain if permission to be on the land in question has been given.

Black Swan Update: Project Cancelled

We regret to announce that the meeting tomorrow evening (Wednesday 22nd March)  has been cancelled. The team has reviewed the information received from the survey and from research &  investigations with other community pubs, the team has concluded that the project does not meet enough the key success criteria to be a viable project as a community-owned pub.

However, should an individual, or group of individuals, want to buy the pub, then there is enough evidence to suggest that the Black Swan could easily ‘fly’ again, especially as a free house. The team are very willing to share the red book valuation, our business plan and suggested forecasts. We would all be delighted if the Black Swan were to remain as a pub.

Critical Success Factors for a Community-Owned Pub

  • Community of +/-2000 required for optimum response
  • No or limited competition nearby
  • Local benefactor to act “swing financier”: eg “soft” loans
  • Good staff accommodation
  • Limited refurbishments required
  • Enthusiastic support from community
  • Ability to raise an average of £1,000/head (ranges of £500 through to £40,000)
  • Ability to pull together a Team with following skills (or free access to these skills): Legal, Commercial, Pubs/hospitality, Financial, VAT, Communications/Marketing

We would like to thank those people who donated money to the fighting fund, which we partially used to fund the ‘red book’ survey/valuation. If you would like the balance of your donation (approximately 50%) to be donated to the Village Green possible purchase, or Village Hall renovations please let us know. Otherwise the monies will be returned by cheque.

Monxton Parish Council will continue to try and purchase the village green on behalf of the parish, and potentially the car park, subject to costs and any conditions imposed by Enterprise Inns.

The team would like to thanks villagers for the support provided to date. If anyone wishes to discuss any aspect of the project please contact Sarah Dowding on sarah@classictravelling.com or Mike Cleugh at mikecleugh@hotmail.com

Monxton vs Amport Football Challenge – Report

The annual Monxton vs Amport Challenge took place on 5th February on Amport Green, following a close contest last year which ended in a penalty shoot out. This year saw an excellent turnout with Amport fielding a squad of sixteen and Monxton fourteen, with the side lines packed with enthusiastic support for both teams. The 8 a side contest with rolling subs saw a frenetic first half dominated by the Amport team where an experienced midfield controlled possession. Half time saw Amport go in with a healthy lead with Fraser dominating the show for Amport. Arguably it could have been worse had it not been for the heroic efforts the fans have come to expect from the Monxton keeper, Steve “I’m retiring” Nichols.

Monxton came out in the second half with a spirited performance and seemed to have the upper hand as the experienced Amport footballers started to tire. Tackles were formidable, including Tiff Boldt taking a heavy tackle from Charlie Horrell (yes, they do both play for Monxton). Having weathered long periods of pressure including goals from Tyler and Boldty, Amport scored a late goal to seal Monxton’s fate with a 5 – 2 win.

Congratulations and warm handshakes were exchanged, along with celebratory drinks in the Hawk. Richard Pearce presented the new Amport vs Monxton Challenge Cup to Fraser on behalf of the Amport team, and duly announced that the trophy will be kept behind the bar at the Hawk as a constant reminder of the century long standing, albeit recently, more friendly rivalry between the villages.

Chalkpit Lane – Temporary Closure

Chalkpit Lane will be temporarily closed from 23rd March for 1 week, whilst the drainage works to the ‘pond’ area are carried out. However, the road will be open at all times to residents ONLY.

This is in addition to Abbotts Ann Road being closed between Monxton High Street (crossroads) and Duck Street, Abbotts Ann between 07.30 and 17.00 hours.
