National Trust property, Mottisfont is exhibiting a varied collection of works by Norman Thelwell. The cartoonist is regarded by many as the unofficial artist of the British countryside. In this major exhibition from his private family archives, the artist’s enduringly popular cartoons of little girl on plump ponies are joined by hilarious satires of 20th century life.
Less familiar are his beautiful paintings of local landscapes. He lived close to Mottisfont and captured the countryside in a series of stunning watercolours. This show reveals how Thelwell’s amusing observations on life in the country are rooted in a deep-seated love of the Hampshire landscape. There is additional family fun with Thelwell-inspired trails in the grounds.
Exhibition and trails at Mottisfont from 16 January to 10 April.
