Village Hall Bookings Secretary

After three very enjoyable years of managing bookings for Monxton and Amport Village Hall, during which time she has got to know a great many more locals and enjoyed more than a few village socials, Karin Staines is handing the role on to Angela Reckitt of Keeper’s Hill, Amport.

Angela has lived in the village for almost 2 years, having moved here from Chipping Norton, the gateway to the Cotswolds! In a former life, Angela worked as the Publishing Operations Director for Macmillan Publishers and is now looking for a way to make a regular useful contribution to life in the parish. She is a charming lady and will be a great asset to the village hall. Karin will hand over her role with immediate effect but remains on the committee.

In future email enquiries should be made to Angela at angela@angela-reckitt.com. Enquiries by telephone can be made on 01264 773774.

Queen’s Birthday Street Party

The Monxton and Amport Street Party was held last Saturday (11th June) to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. It was wonderful to see so many villagers coming together, enjoying drinks, the Hog Roast (kindly provided by The Hawk Inn), the band, duck races, pony rides, dog races, walks through Monxton Manor wood and lots of games for all ages throughout the afternoon. The Bec House field was a picture of happiness, dressed in red, white & blue and we were all reminded just how good village life is.

The Bake-Off was another highlight, with so many incredible home-baked cakes kindly donated for the event. Veronica Rushworth Lund, Brenda Gower and Oliver Sutton carefully judged the competition, which resulted in Laura Cleugh winning 1st & 3rd prizes and Juliet Ursell winning 2nd prize. The children’s competition was won by Ralph Boldt (age 8), followed by combined effort by Gabrielle Staines (age 12) & Pippa Glover (age 12) and in 3rd place Emilia Corroon (age 6) for her delicious cup cakes. Thank you to all the bakers for the wonderful selection of such impressive creations!

Importantly, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped towards the event, there are too many to mention individually, but as time is precious for us all, your support was very much appreciated.

Finally, the objective of the event was principally to get everyone together and, along with the rest of the country, to mark a special occasion for The Queen, but we are delighted to confirm the event raised a total of £2,585. Of this amount, £200 will go to Amport School, £60 (donations made from the teas) will go to the Harriet Martin Foundation and the remaining £2,325 will go towards the Village Hall Refurbishment Project.

Thank you to everyone for your support and for making Saturday afternoon a happy, colourful village memory for us all.

St George’s Night Dinner – report

IMG_0705The St George’s Night Dinner, held in the Village Hall on Saturday 23rd April, was a great success with 50 people enjoying a superb and extremely delicious dinner of Greenfield sausages, mash and peas followed by Monxton Apple & Blackberry Crumble with cream – all beautifully home-made  by the wonderful organisers. All washed down with excellent Berry Bros wines and quality ales.

We had a challenging and thought-provoking quiz on all things England, Shakespeare and St George, which caused much chatter and debate throughout the evening.

There has been some lovely feedback saying how delicious the food was and what a good, fun night it was – and everyone’s expectations were exceeded.

The total profit from the evening was £465.60, which was split equally between the Walk The Walk breast cancer charity and the Renovation Fund for Monxton & Amport Village Hall (£232.80 for each charity).

The plan is to hold a similar event next year, so put Saturday 22nd April 2017 in your diaries for a bigger and better event!

Moviola: 29 March

AMPORT & MONXTON MOVIES:   Tuesday 29 March 2016

Hampshire Moviola,
in association with Monxton & Amport Film Nights, proudly presents

THE LADY IN THE VAN (12A)

A wonderful film in which, in a nutshell, a man forms an unexpected friendship with an eccentric, itinerant woman who is living in a car and moving from one parking space to another in Gloucester Crescent, Camden.  Eventually, he invites her to park temporarily on his drive way and she stays for 15 years!

Maggie Smith delivers a truly outstanding performance well supported by stars such as Jim Broadbent, Gwen Taylor, Frances de la Tour, Dominic Cooper and James Corden to name but a few.  A very ‘British’ movie written by Alan Bennett both funny and touching and ‘mostly true’.  A film not to be missed!
