UK Home Safety Week

Next week is UK Home Safety Week and the police are working with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) to identify any vulnerable local residents who might benefit from a free home safety visit. This includes installing up to two smoke detectors per property, offering fire safety advice specific to the house and the occupant’s lifestyle, and carrying out an informal risk assessment of the home to point out any fire hazards and offering solutions to reduce the identified risks.

If you think you might be entitled to a home safety visit or perhaps know an older person, a family member or neighbour, who would benefit from this service, HFRS is keen to hear from you.
To find out more call 023 8062 6809 or email community.firesafety@hantsfire.gov.uk.

Neighbourhood Watch Alert: February 2014

    Hampshire Constabulary Re-organisation

    By now I expect you will have seen the headlines about the effect of the next round of budget cuts.
    Bob Combes, Chairman of Hampshire & IoW Neighbourhood Watch Association, represented NW at a briefing on 12th February, where the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Chief Constable outlined the thinking behind the proposed changes. He has provided some notes on that meeting:

    • The first budget cut of £55m was made mainly from ‘back office’ areas and collaboration with other Police forces –and it left local policing virtually untouched.
    • This budget cut of £25m will involve a reduction in both staff and front line officers.
    • “There have to be changes in what the Police do – and how they do it”.

    The Police seem determined to turn this funding crisis into an opportunity – and we can already see some positive points:
    • There remains a strong emphasis on supporting community policing and greater collaboration with our local Safety Partnerships;
    • Each Police/council district will have their own senior police officer who will focus on neighbourhood issues and developing effective partnership working ( NW mentioned in particular);
    • Rural areas will have dedicated police teams;
    • Community Police teams will not be pulled away for other tasks;
    • There will be no reduction in PCSO numbers.

    Alert: Notice to appear in court email scam

    The Business Crime Reduction Centre is warning people about a new email scam that threatens victims with court action. Fraudsters have been sending out legitimate looking spoofed emails designed to trick recipients into installing malware. The email says you have been notified and scheduled to appear for a court hearing, and contains specific dates, times, locations and reference numbers.
    It asks you to download a copy of the ‘court notice’ attached. The downloaded zip file actually contains an .exe file (a file that executes when clicked) containing a virus.
    The email has no connection to the Criminal Justice System and anyone receiving the email should not download any attachments or click any links.

    There have been no known reported incidents in Hampshire that NW is aware of, however it is worth bearing in mind. While it seems to be more business orientated, residents are as likely to receive the email.
    Further details including where to report this and any other fraud can be found by clicking here.

Neighbourhood Watch Alert – December

Summary of reported rural crime in north and east Hampshire
Burglaries to non-dwelling premises are, again, the most reported incidents in the rural areas of north and east Hampshire. These incidents have been reported across the north of the county, but the areas that have seen most of these offences are the rural areas around Basingstoke, Andover and Winchester. Power tools have mainly been targeted together with off-road vehicles. In addition there has been an increase in thefts from stables including horse tack and rugs.

Telephone scams continue to be a problem. Hampshire Trading Standards Service publish information on these, including prize wins, tax rebates and loan scams. For further advice or to report a scam contact:

Advice from the Police for Christmas
PCSO David Trowbridge and the Stockbridge/Andover Rural Safer Neighbourhoods Team offer the following tips for Christmas:

Dwelling Burglary

  • Don’t leave Christmas presents under the tree in view of a window
  • Make sure windows and doors are locked every time you leave the house
  • Avoid leaving tools and ladders lying around that could assist someone to get into your home
  • When you go out at night make it appear that someone is home. Draw the curtains and leave a light on. Always use a timer switch to put on a lamp or radio.

Vehicle crime

  • Before you leave your car, ensure all windows and doors are closed and locked
  • Avoid leaving your purchases and presents in your vehicle. If you must, make sure they are not on display. Rather store them in the boot and make sure the car is locked
  • Always lock your bike. Use a D lock and make the locked bike difficult to manoeuvre by keep any gaps between the lock and bike frame small.

Online shopping

  • When online shopping ensure you go to the official websites and have adequate anti-virus software, especially when purchasing expensive items.

Personal safety

  • Never leave a bag unattended in a trolley, even if for a couple of seconds
  • Keep wallets in an inside pocket and bags closed
    and out of sight from potential pick-pockets
  • Keep your PIN number confidential and when entering your PIN number at a terminal ensure no one can see you enter it.

Property registration

  • If you are buying or receiving valuable gifts such as bikes, mobiles or electrical items register them for free at www.immobilise.com. In doing so you will assist the police in returning your property should it be lost or stolen.

Have a Happy, Safe and Secure Christmas!

Hampshire Horsewatch Crime Alert

This is flash message to get the warning out and being circulated to Horsewatch members.

In the south of the county a spate of burglaries in stables, shelters is starting up. Wickham, Warsash, Southampton, New Forest area are  currently being targeted.

The latest crime was last night in Warsash, a  white small car style van with male occupants was seen close to the scene. Males and vehicle are suspected of being involved until such time they can be eliminated from the crime. This vehicle was seen about 8.30pm. Stolen items include saddles, bridles, hats, grooming kits, whips, rugs, and feed. You are all potential victims of crime so now is once again time to review your stable and outbuilding security.

All the time we recommend that you post code all your property. If you can take your more valuable and important property home with you then so much the better.

Rugs will get stolen as sure as the sun rises and sets. Equally as sure the majority of horse owners will not post-code their rugs. Post-coding is a good crime prevention and deterrent. Why wait to post-code your property?

Pass the word about to be on the look out for small white vans. Equally, be suspicious of any vehicle and person seen near your property.

If you are the victim of a theft of property have a good search of the area around your land. It is often the case that thieves will hide stolen goods to return later to collect.

Again stolen property has to be sold back into the equine community.  If you are going to buy second-hand tack examine it carefully for post-codes or signs of damage where identifying features have been removed. Sad as it is but a seller of second-hand tack could be moving on stolen property. When you are considering buying second-hand property take notice of who is doing the selling and why are they selling the items.

Any suspicious vehicles or people seen report the matter to the police by dialling 101. In an emergency dial 999.
