Verges in Monxton

There’s recently been an article on the BBC website about roadside verges being the “last refuge for wild flowers”. (6 June 2015). Read the full article below or click the link.

Would you like to see more wild flowers on the verges in Monxton, or would you prefer them to be cut? If cut, then the grass cuttings should be removed. Or should the verges be cut once the cow parsley has finished flowering? Or should we just keep control of the nettles? We live in a Conservation Area – surely this should also be for conserving our environment? Your thoughts would be appreciated?

More than 700 species of wild plants – almost half of the native flora of the British Isles – are found on road verges, according to a study.

Many plants once found in meadows now only thrive beside roads, where they provide essential habitat for insects, says charity Plantlife.

But it says one in 10 of the plants is at risk of extinction, in part because councils cut verges too early.

Local authorities say shorter verges are safer for drivers and pedestrians.

Dr Trevor Dines, botanical specialist for the charity, said more than 97% of meadows had been destroyed in England since the 1930s, with road verges becoming the last stretches of natural habitat for wildlife such as bees and other insects.

Road verges can be a haven for wild plants like cow parsley

“Most of our farmland is now hostile to many of our wild plants and other wildlife due to the loss of wild flower meadows and the use of herbicides and fertilisers,” he told BBC News.

“The roadside verges are often the last refuge for wild flowers and the wildlife there depends on them.

“It’s almost as if plants have been squeezed out of farmland and now they’re being squeezed out of road verges from bad management.”

The Local Government Association has said keeping road verges well-maintained means motorists have a good line of sight and allows pedestrians to walk more safely alongside busy roads.

Plantlife International says road verges are of particular importance to rare plants such as Deptford pink, tower mustard and spiked rampion.

They also act as wildlife corridors and provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies and moths.

The wild plant conservation charity says many of Britain’s road verges are being cut down in full flower threatening the wildflowers and the wildlife that depends on them.

It is calling on members of the public to sign a petition urging councils to do more to enhance the wildlife value of road verges.

Its management principles for road verges include:

  • Allowing plants to complete their full life cycle, ie to grow, flower and set seed
  • Removing grass cuttings
  • Allowing flowers to return over time as they spread naturally.

Dr Dines added: “If we just give them a chance, wildflowers can return.”

St Mary’s Church Monxton

Many thanks to all who contributed to the recent Christian Aid collection in Monxton. We achieved the grand total of £400.45. This is our best ever result and furthermore just over half of that sum was gift aided, adding another £56.

Our church collection for Nepal was also extremely well supported and we able to send a cheque for £440 to the DEC to help the relief work following the earthquakes in Nepal.

In little over two weeks the people of Monxton have raised almost £900 for two very worthy causes, an amazing result.

VERY WELL DONE.

Mucky Duck Race Report

Kit MalthouseSunday’s Mucky Duck Race, held on the Village Green, was extremely well attended by many from Monxton, Amport and nearby villages. Our newly-elected local MP, Kit Malthouse also came along to see the fun, accompanied by his family – and to meet villagers. There were five duck races and all the ducks were sold out. The event raised £375 which will be shared between the Hawk Conservancy and Amport & Monxton Community Charity.

Amport School PTA also raised money from their brilliant duck decorating and face painting, and the delicious Broughton Water Buffalo burgers sold out as well.  The Black Swan bar on the green was very popular too.

The prizes for the duck race winners were wonderful little rubber ducks mounted on an engraved plinth, along with some lovely prizes from the race sponsors.

So same again next year – but with more ducks!

Rhythm Time

RT Logo NewRhythm Time is one of the UK’s leading and longest established providers of music classes to babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. Our passion is music and its ability to stimulate every part of a child’s brain. As such, we’ve developed a unique set of music courses specifically created for different age groups. Written by Kathy Doolan (a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music), each course helps with a child’s development and learning. We are also a member of the Pre-School Music Association.

What makes us special?

  • Structured classes provide security and continuity whilst new songs and activities make things even more fun and exciting.
  • All the songs and music are specially written or adapted by Rhythm Time.
  • Teachers use their natural singing voices (ie no singing along to backing tracks as this inhibits a child’s learning).
  • Continuous learning and development as children progress from stimulating baby classes right up to educational pre-school sessions.
  • Fantastic music classes combined with a superb personal service. Plus no joining fee!

What are the benefits to children?
We offer an excellent preparation for school by developing a child’s confidence, creativity, listening skills, language, numeracy and co-ordination. We also help to nurture musical skills such as pitch, pulse, dynamics and rhythm. Plus, it’s lots of fun! We provide all children with a Progress Ladder to keep on their walls – each term they’ll receive a certificate and sticker that they can then place on the chart to show their progress up our wonderful musical journey.

753Young Baby Courses (birth to 6 months)
In their first few months, your baby’s main neural pathways are formed in their brain. So this is the perfect time to help stimulate all their senses with our fun, multi-sensory sessions. In this 4-week, music-based course, we’ll show you lots of special bonding and development activities that both you and your young baby will love. These 30-minute classes will help to stimulate baby’s vision and hearing, promote deeper sleep, improve muscle tone, flexibility and circulation, introduce them to ‘tummy time’, plus LOTS more.

Stimulating Multi-Sensory Baby Class (birth to 14 months)
Our classes aim to stimulate vision, listening and sense of touch. The varied activities assist with balance, development of the inner ear, speech, language and small motor movements. We use exciting songs, percussion instruments and equipment (balls, mirrors, scarves, lycra, sensory blankets, lights, windmills, foil and bubbles amongst others!) (Baby book included in your first term’s fees).

Exciting Toddler Class (14 months to 3 years)
At 14 months, a different development stage requires a new course: With the help of Rhythm Time’s Rat-a-tat puppet, toddlers learn to listen and improve their concentration. Hand/eye co-ordination and motor skills are strengthened by using a variety of instruments, whilst language and vocal chords are developed through singing our simple songs. All courses are in line with the Early Learning Foundation and Key Stage 1 goals. (A music CD is included in each term’s fees).

Educational Pre-school Class (3 to 5 years)
This is where everything comes together. Children learn to conduct, play pitch and rhythm games, listen to orchestral instruments and compose simple pieces amongst other things! Their communication, language, literacy, mathematical skills and creativity will also be developed. All this whilst having fantastic fun!

Monxton Village Hall Classes:
Thursday mornings during term time.
9.30am: toddler class (if enough demand – min. 6 children)
10.15am: pre-school class
11am: baby class

Andover Green Party Candidate: Dean Marriner

GPLogoStackGreenForWebOn behalf of the Andover Green Party, I would like to thank all the voters and supporters in Andover West who came out and voted for me in the recent Hampshire County by-election. The party and I came a respectable fourth and although this meant last place, it did show that there are 698 people in the area who would prefer a Green voice on the council.

I would like to encourage our supporters in this area to get involved with the creation of the local party and invite all to our first post-election meeting. This will be held on Thursday 28th May at 8pm in the Oak Room at the White Hart Hotel, Andover. All of our supporters (party members or not) are invited to attend and get involved with planning activities for the future and we are also looking for volunteers to help with future campaigns on local issues.
